What is a Preproduction Volunteer?

A Textbook Preproduction Assistant Volunteer works on projects to prepare them for live production.
Pre-production of a textbook includes these activities:
(1) Creation of a TOC (Table of Contents) for use in building an EasyBooks project,
(2) Creation of a Project Spec Sheet with project markup guidelines for narrators, proof listeners and final editors, and
(3) Bookmarking of the project's book PDF as further guidance for narrators, proof listeners and final editors.
(4) Reviews of these materials by other Book Production Assistants and the assigned Final Editor for each project.
The Project Spec Sheets and bookmarking help provide continuity and consistency for production volunteers all across the country that may be working on the same project. The TOC becomes the digital navigation that our students use to get around projects in our reading app.
To get started:
1. Please make sure you've submitted an application to volunteer with Learning Ally. If you've already submitted the application, please skip this step. How do you know if you've submitted an application? If you receive emails from us, you are likely already in our volunteer database.
2. Review the Volunteer Opportunities page in the Volunteer Portal and complete the Audiobook Volunteer Intake Form for this specific role, located in the next steps tab to start training. Someone from the Virtual Hands-on Training Center will be in touch with you to set up training.
3. Join us on Twist: Twist is an app that serves as a group chat for our Audiobook Production Volunteers and volunteer team leads.
Head to the Textbook LaunchPad Twist Channel and click the JOIN button at the lower right to enter. Once you're in, you can click on the Spec Sheet Creator/Spec Sheet Reviewer Questions thread to meet additional volunteers and ask questions.
